There is a common, persistent myth about lobbying: that it is a profession built entirely on a foundation of firm handshakes, expensive dinners, and backroom political connections. But anyone who has spent time navigating the halls of Michigan’s state capitol knows the truth. The most effective advocacy isn’t built on charm; it is built on credibility. And there is no better place to build that credibility than in the rigorous, detail-oriented trenches of policy analysis.

The skills from my first job in Lansing as a policy analyst built a skill set that I find invaluable today.

Knowing what the words mean is the first step.

Identifying how a single, seemingly minor sentence in a draft bill might ripple across an entire sector and have real-life consequences for people is critical. When you meet with lawmakers, you aren’t just pitching an idea; you are offering concrete legislative solutions. Because of my analyst background, I don’t just ask for a change; I can hand a committee chair the exact draft language needed to achieve the desired outcome.

Policy isn’t just words; it’s dollars.

A significant portion of my time as an analyst was spent studying state budgets, appropriations bills, and fiscal agency reports. Whether tracking human services funding allocations or analyzing the economic impact of regulatory policy, I learned to speak the language of numbers. In lobbying, this is a massive differentiator. Lawmakers are constantly inundated with emotional appeals and blank arguments, but what they need to defend a vote is data.

Giving a great elevator pitch.

I agree with my friends; I’m downright nerdy. I easily get trapped in “policy wonkiness,” getting lost in the academic weeds of a bill.  But thank goodness for the legislators I worked with who demanded verbal bill summaries be just two sentences, even if they were highly technical.  That taught me not to lose sight of the bigger picture.

Your word is your most valuable asset.

If you give a legislator inaccurate information, your credibility is shot, and your access is gone.  As a policy analyst, I gained a deep respect for objective truth, thorough research, and bipartisan policy impacts. It taught me to anticipate opposing arguments before they even hit a committee room floor. I’m proud of my policy analyst cred and for drawing on those skills today. Now my focus is to just take the data out of the spreadsheets and bring it directly to the decision
