For over 12 years, I held various leadership roles within the legislature, including Legislative Director for then-Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema. In that role, I ran the day-to-day agenda in the Senate and served as the liaison to the Governor and the Speaker of the House’s offices.
Juggling caucus priorities and member issues, coupled with the interests of the lobby corps, helped me understand the balancing act that was needed to move issues from concept to a final vote. While you always want the end product to be exactly what you’re hoping for, understanding that you can’t let perfect get in the way of good is important. There are nuances and many stakeholders involved with each bill, so you need to keep pressing or you’ll never move forward. Being able to carry that experience from the highest level of government into lobbying has allowed me to be a strong and confident advocate to help guide our firm’s clients.
