State Parties Electing Leadership

As MLC’s Communications and Social Media Manager, Liz Gullett keeps clients informed and up-to-date on the goings on in Lansing and the Capitol.

This Saturday, the Michigan Democratic Party and Michigan Republican Party will hold state conventions to elect leadership. Michigan is heading into a big election year in 2026, making these positions critical to races up and down the ballot.

Michigan Democratic Party:

    • The convention will be held at the Renaissance Center in Detroit.
    • The party will be electing the chair and two vice chairs for the party.
    • Lavora Barnes is the outgoing chairwoman; after serving for six years, she declined to seek reelection.
    • Candidates:
      • Former State Senator Curtis Hertel
      • Political Organizer Al “BJ” Williams

Michigan Republican Party:

    • The convention is being held at Huntington Place in Detroit.
    • Current party chair, Pete Hoekstra, is leaving his role after an appointment by President Trump to serve as ambassador to Canada.
    • Candidates:
      • Joe Cella, former ambassador to Fiji
      • Former Michigan Republican Party co-chair Meshawn Maddock
      • State Senator Jim Runestad
