Knowingly making a false statement or misrepresentation on an election could be punishable under legislation passed by the Senate this week.

Key Points:

    • Senate Bill 533 was introduced by Senator Mary Cavanagh (D-Redford).
    • An individual making a false statement, intended to impede or prevent someone from voting, could face a fine of up to $1,000.
    • An employer could face a fine of up to $10,000 if an employee hired for election-related purposes made a false statement, intended to impede or prevent someone from voting. There’s an exemption if the employer had no prior knowledge of the planned false statement.

Next Steps:

    • The bill was referred to the House Government Operations Committee for consideration.
