Next State Superintendent Selected

The State Board of Education voted to offer the position of state superintendent to Dr. Glenn Maleyko. The current superintendent, Dr. Rice, announced in April that he was retiring effective October 3.  Dr. Pamela Pugh, the Board president, will negotiate a contract with Dr. Maleko, with the goal of having him ready to take over the role on October 4.

Biography:

    • Maleyko currently serves as superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools, the state’s third-largest school district by enrollment.
    • He’s worked in the district for 30 years. Prior to being named superintendent in 2015, he held the positions of central administrator, building principal, and teacher.
    • During his tenure as Dearborn superintendent, the district’s graduation rates have reached 95% and six of its schools have been named U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Schools.
    • Maleyko earned a doctorate degree in philosophy in educational leadership and policy studies from Wayne State University; an educational specialist degree in educational leadership and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Detroit Mercy; and a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from the University of Windsor.

State Superintendent:

    • The superintendent is the principal executive officer of the Michigan Department of Education.
    • They are responsible for the department’s day-to-day management, supervision, and leadership.
    • Additionally, they’re responsible for developing cooperative working relationships with other government departments, the governor’s office, the state legislature, and constituent groups.
