Governor Makes Reappointments to Commission

As MLC’s Communications and Social Media Manager, Liz Gullett keeps clients informed and up-to-date on the goings on in Lansing and the Capitol.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced two reappointments to the Liquor Control Commission. The Commission is responsible for being the sole wholesaler of all spirits products in the state and the licensing of the manufacture and sale of all beer, wine, distilled spirits, and mixed spirit drinks. Additionally, they enforce the state’s liquor laws and the rules of the Commission and the collection of excise and specific taxes on beer, wine, distilled spirits, and mixed spirit drinks.

Lee Gonzales, Commissioner

    • Gonzales was reappointed for a term commencing June 13, 2024, and expiring June 12, 2028.
    • Prior to serving on the commission, he was deputy director of legislative and external affairs for the Department of Civil Rights.
    • He was previously elected to the Michigan House of Representatives.
    • Gonzales received a Bachelor of Arts in urban studies and his Master of Public Administration from the University of Michigan-Fling.

Edward Toma, Commissioner

    • Toma was also reappointed for a term commencing June 13, 2024, and expiring June 12, 2028.
    • Previously, he served as an investigator and regulation agent for the enforcement division of the Liquor Control Commission.
    • He received a Bachelor of Arts in integrative studies from Oakland University.

The appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
