Governor Makes Appointments

As MLC’s Communications and Social Media Manager, Liz Gullett keeps clients informed and up-to-date on the goings on in Lansing and the Capitol.

Last Friday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced a number of appointments to boards and commissions. The appointments include:

State Fire Marshall – Thomas Hughes Jr.

    • He is the outgoing deputy fire chief for Northville Township. He’s served in multiple positions in his over 21 years of service.
    • His term commences on June 2, 2025, and expires at the pleasure of the governor, no later than June 1, 2029.
    • The State Fire Marshal leads the Michigan Bureau of Fire Services, a division of the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, and also serves as a member of the State Board of Mechanical Rules and as an ex-officio member of the Fire Fighters Training Council and State Safety Board.
    • His appointment is not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.

Michigan Gaming Control Board – Jim Ananich

    • He is the president and CEO of the Greater Flint Health Coalition and a lecturer in state and local government at the University of Michigan – Flint.
    • Ananich previously held positions as Michigan Senate Minority Leader, State Representative, and Flint City Council President.
    • He is appointed to represent Democrats and as Chair for a term commencing April 25, 2025, and expiring December 31, 2028.
    • The appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.

State Tax Commission – Nancy Quarles

    • She is a former State Representative and vice chair of the Tax Policy Committee, and a former Oakland County Commissioner.
    • Quarles will be appointed as a Democratic member.
    • The State Tax Commission is comprised of three members appointed by the governor. The State Tax Commission has general supervision of the administration of the property tax laws in Michigan and shall render such assistance and give such advice to assessors as they deem necessary. In 2009, the State Tax Commission became responsible for the education and certification of assessing officers.
    • The appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.

The full list of boards and commissions where appointments were made: Michigan Gaming Control Board; State Tax Commission; Certificate of Need Commission; Early Childhood Investment Corporation Executive Committee; Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority Board of Commissioners; Crime Victim Services Commission; Commission on Middle Eastern American Affairs; Michigan Wildlife Council; Board of Health and Safety Compliance and Appeals; Michigan Iron Industry Museum Advisory Board; Municipal Stability Board;  Michigan Veteran’s Facility Authority Board of Directors; Electronic Recording Commission; Michigan Bean Commission; School Safety and Mental Health Commission; Organized Retail Crime Advisory Board; Michigan Board of Professional Engineers; Michigan Board of Dietetics and Nutrition; Manufactured Housing Commission; Michigan Interagency Council on Homelessness; and the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board.
