Leading up to the November 5 general election, we are highlighting races generally considered swing seats.

District Overview:

The district includes Lansing and communities surrounding the capital. The district contains Clinton, Ingham, Livingston, and Shiawassee counties and portions of Eaton, Genesee, and Oakland counties.

Commentary:

Republican Congressman Tom Barrett is running for a second term in Congress. He won the seat in 2024, flipping the seat, which had previously been held by then-Democratic Congresswoman (now U.S. Senator) Elissa Slotkin.

The district is evenly divided along partisan lines and is considered one of the most competitive congressional races in Michigan. The Democratic nominee, William Lawrence, was the most progressive candidate in the Democratic primary, offering voters a sharp contrast in this race. Both parties are investing heavily to win the seat in November.

Democratic Candidate:

    • William Lawrence – Founder of Sunrise Movement, the Michigan Rent Is Too Damn High coalition, and the Mid-Michigan Tenant Resource Center.

Republican Candidate:

 Green Candidate:

    • Shane Dedrick
