Representative Tonya Myers Phillips (D-Detroit) is serving her first term in the Michigan House of Representatives.
Biography
She brings over 20 years of experience as an attorney and community leader. Beginning her career at the Sugar Law Center for Economic and Social Justice, she worked on environmental justice and enforcement provisions of the Detroit Living Wage Ordinance. Moving into private practice, Representative Phillips represented indigent criminal defendants. Additionally, she worked as a housing attorney with Michigan Legal Services.
Representative Phillips is an adjunct professor at Wayne State University Law School and previously served on Detroit’s Charter Revision Commission.
She received her bachelor’s and law degrees from the University of Michigan.
District
She represents the 7th House District, which includes portions of Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park.
