Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced the launch of a resource for K-12 schools, educators, and youth organizations to encourage civic engagement by hosting mock elections for students.

Key Points:

    • During a mock election, students are selected as a secretary of state, election clerk, poll workers, and election observers.
    • Students decide on a topic for the election, nominate candidates, and then vote.
    • Students will learn about the process of counting the ballots and will announce a “winner” to the group.

Voter Preregistration Week:

    • The announcement coincides with the first Voter Preregistration Week.
    • Governor Whitmer issued an official proclamation, designating the week of September 8th as Voter Preregistration Week.
    • Preregistration allows teenagers 16 years and older to take proactive action and ensure they are enrolled to vote as soon as they turn 18.
    • More than 126,000 young people in Michigan are eligible to preregister.
