Learning Through Experience

As MLC’s Communications and Social Media Manager, Liz Gullett keeps clients informed and up-to-date on the goings on in Lansing and the Capitol.

Sarah McNally has been an intern with our firm. Before she left, I asked her to share some thoughts on her time at MLC.

What drew you to seek out an internship with a lobbying firm?

Before working at MLC, I interned for a state Senator and on a state senate campaign. These experiences piqued my interest in the entities that influence policy and work with legislators and businesses. I was curious to learn more about legislative and regulatory issues and how the legislature and departments work from an outside perspective.

What is something key you learned through your position at MLC?

I saw the impact the state budget and legislative policy have on the state’s businesses and associations. Lobbyists ensure their clients are supported by policies and serve as advocates to connect the two sectors. What makes MLC stand out is how much the lobbyists care about their client’s success.

What lessons will you take with you?

Communicating effectively and often is paramount to maintaining relationships and building rapport. I learned that including stakeholders in conversations to hear different perspectives makes policy stronger. Being early, proactive, and going the extra mile shows people you care and take things seriously. The lobbyists’ passion, work ethic, and dedication pays off for their clients; I am fortunate to have learned from the experts.
