Following two special general elections last night, the House Democratic Caucus is back to 56 members in its caucus. The House Democrats held a 56-54 majority until last November when two House Democratic members resigned following successful elections to local mayoral offices. Since then, the 54-54 partisan makeup of the House created a bit of a standstill, with either party needing at least one vote from the other party to pass legislation.

The first election was in the 13th House District, located in Wayne and Macomb Counties. Democratic candidate Mai Xiong received 65.63% of the vote, over Republican candidate Ronald Singer. She was expected to win as the district has a 68% Democratic base.

The second special election was held in the 25th House District, which is located in Wayne County.

The race had three candidates and Peter Herzberg, the Democratic candidate, was successful with 59.62% of the vote. The Republican candidate, Josh Powell, received 38.32% and the US Taxpayer Candidate, Robert Stano, received 2.06% of the vote. The district has a 62% Democratic base, and the results were as anticipated.

The winning candidates will be sworn into the Michigan House of Representatives in the coming days.

Please note the above election results are unofficial at this time.
