Next Tuesday, voters in the 13th House District will vote in a special general election race. This seat was left vacant after the resignation of former Representative Lori Stone, following her election to Mayor of Warren this past November.

Candidates:

    • Democratic candidateMai Xiong
      • Macomb County Commissioner.
      • Endorsements include Governor Whitmer, Senator Stephanie Chang, Warren Mayor Lori Stone, Representative Jimmie Wilson, and numerous organizations.
    • Republican candidateRonald Singer
      • Works in vehicle equipment manufacturing.

13th House District:

    • The district is located in Wayne and Macomb Counties, including portions of Warren and Detroit.
    • The seat has a 68% Democratic base; thus, the Democratic candidate is anticipated to win.

This election is especially important as the House now has a 54-54 split majority following this resignation, as well as a resignation in the 25th House District. While Speaker Joe Tate (D-Detroit) retained his leadership of the chamber, to pass legislation either party would need at least one vote from the other party as 55 affirmative votes are needed.

We will post the results of both special general elections on the MLC Blog on Wednesday, April 17.
