Today, following remarks from Lansing Mayor Andy Schor and Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist, Governor Gretchen Whitmer laid out her legislative priorities for the fall. Highlighting the theme of, “Make it in Michigan” ensuring anyone and everyone has a chance at success. The address focused on four key areas:
Health of our people

- Pass the “Reproductive Health Act”, removing restrictions to abortion access statewide.
- Codify measures within the Affordable Care Act, including protections for pre-existing conditions, permitting children to stay on their parent’s insurance until they are 26, banning annual or lifetime caps, and requiring insurance coverage of essential services.
- Implement the remaining recommendations of the Prescription Drug Task Force.
Health of the planet

- Enact a 100% clean energy standard.
- Improve energy efficiency programs such as sealing windows and upgrading utilities.
- Issue permits for clean energy projects through the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC).
- Authorize the MPSC to incorporate climate and equity into their regulatory decisions.
Health of the economy

- Enact paid family and medical leave.
- Streamline the permitting process.
Health of the democracy

- Increase election security.
- Ensure that politicians can’t remain in office if they are voted out.
