On Tuesday, Senator Kristen McDonald Rivet (D-Bay City) won her election to the United States House of Representatives. Prior to her taking office in January to Congress, she will need to resign from her Michigan Senate seat, leaving it open.

Key Points:

    • Senator McDonald Rivet represents the 35th Senate District, which includes portions of Midland, Bay, and Saginaw counties.
    • Governor Gretchen Whitmer will call special primary and general elections for the remainder of the term, which runs through 2026.
    • Democrats currently have a slim 20-18 majority, when the Senator resigns, the partisan makeup will change to 19-18.
    • This seat is competitive, if a Republican wins, the Senate would move to an even 19-19 split.
