After two terms with a Democratic governor, eyes are on this race to see if Republicans can flip the highest office in the state. Michigan is viewed as a purple state, and party control of the governor’s office has tended to flip back and forth. However, in 2022, Governor Whitmer won reelection by almost 11 percentage points. Additionally, this midterm election year is seen as favoring Democratic Party candidates throughout the country.

In their respective primary races, in polling, Secretary Benson is viewed as the heavy favorite to win in August. Congressman John James has been viewed as the favorite and has received the coveted endorsement of President Donald Trump, providing him an important boost among Republican voters.
