Primary Election Overview: 40th District

Through the primary election on August 6, we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. The candidate’s website, professional information, and a sample of known endorsements are listed when available.

District Overview

The 40th House District is located in Kalamazoo County.

Commentary

Representative Christine Morse is not running for reelection, leaving this seat open. This district is Democratic-leaning and will be mainly decided at the primary election in August, but it is on the watch list in November. There is only one candidate in the Republican primary, while two people are campaigning in the Democratic primary race to move forward to the general.

Democratic Candidates:

    • Lisa Brayton – Portage City Councilwoman, co-owns a dentistry practice with her husband.
    • Matt Longjohn – Doctor, non-profit leader.
      • Endorsements – Senator Sean McCann, Representative Julie Rogers, Portage Mayor Patricia Randall, a number of Kalamazoo County Commissioners, and Portage City Council members.
