Primary Election Overview: 1st House District

Through the primary election on August 6, we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. The candidate’s website and professional information are listed when available.

District Overview

The 1st House District is located in Wayne County and includes a portion of the City of Detroit and the City of River Rouge. 

Commentary

This seat has a strong 92% Democratic base, making the primary race the one to watch. Representative Tyrone Carter has served three terms in the House and is eligible to run for reelection due to recent changes to term limits.

Democratic Candidates:

    • Representative Tyrone Carter – State Representative, former Wayne County Sheriff Executive Lieutenant, and assistant director of public safety at Wayne County Community College District.
    • Jay Lovelady

Republican Candidate:

    • Valerie Whittaker
