On Wednesday, the House and Senate held the first day of session for the 2025 – 2026 legislative term. During session, members of the House took a ceremonial oath of office, and both chambers adopted their standing rules for the term. As the Senate is in the middle of its four-year term, leadership, and committees will continue as they have been.

House Leadership:

    • The chamber officially voted for leadership within the House.
    • As we previously shared, Representative Matt Hall (R-Kalamazoo) received a unanimous vote to serve as Speaker of the House.
    • Representative Rachelle Smit (R-Shelbyville) received the vote of her colleagues to serve as Speaker Pro Tempore.
    • Scott Starr was selected to serve as Clerk of the House of Representatives.

Next Steps:

    • In the coming weeks, Speaker Hall will name committees, committee chairs, and committee members.
    • Already announced are six new Oversight subcommittees, which will have specific subject areas within their purview including child welfare, state investments, and public health.
