During the 2024 election, the increase in young voter turnout in Michigan was the highest in the nation. Additionally, Michigan ranked third in the nation for overall young voter turnout, according to a recent study by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University.

Key Points:

    • Nationally, 47% of youth voted in the 2024 election.
    • Turnout among voters aged 18-29 jumped to 58% in Michigan, an increase of 4% from 2020.
    • Michigan’s youth voter turnout rate was behind only Minnesota (62%) and Maine (60%).
    • According to the report, states with policies making it hardest to register also had the lowest youth voter turnout rates.
      • The report highlighted Michigan’s law automatically preregistering 16 and 17-year-old residents to vote when they get their driver’s license or state ID, unless they opt out.
      • Preregistered voters are automatically registered to vote when they turn 17.5.
    • The three states with the lowest youth voter turnout in 2024 were Oklahoma (33%), Arkansas (33%), and Louisiana (36%).

“Michigan’s young voters are engaged and embracing the power of their voice and vote,” Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said. “As we kick off Michigan Voter Preregistration Week, we celebrate our state’s accessible election laws that are breaking down barriers for our young citizens and making our democracy even stronger.”
