Incoming Superintendent Signs Contract

Dr. Glenn Maleyko will officially begin his role as State Superintendent on December 8, under the terms of his three-year contract signed this week.

Key Points:

    • The State Board of Education selected Dr. Maleyko on August 26, and contract negotiations commenced.
    • Current State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice will retire on October 3. At that time, Dr. Sue Carnell, chief deputy superintendent, will serve as the interim Superintendent until Dr. Maleyko’s start date.

Dr. Maleyko:

    • He has 30 years of experience in Dearborn Public Schools as a central office administrator, building principal, and teacher. He’s served as superintendent since 2015.
    • Maleyko earned a doctorate degree in philosophy in educational leadership and policy studies from Wayne State University; an educational specialist degree in educational leadership and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Detroit Mercy; and a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from the University of Windsor.

State Superintendent:

    • The superintendent is the principal executive officer of the Michigan Department of Education.
    • They are responsible for the department’s day-to-day management, supervision, and leadership.
    • Additionally, they’re responsible for developing cooperative working relationships with other government departments, the governor’s office, the state legislature, and constituent groups.
