Members of the House Democratic Caucus announced their proposal to increase standards for government ethics and transparency. Named the BRITE Act (Bringing Reforms in Integrity, Transparency, and Ethics), it increases reporting and disclosure requirements.

Key Points:

    • Requires 527 funds and 501(c)4 organizations affiliated with lawmakers to register with the Secretary of State.
    • Allows the Bureau of Elections to seek an injunction in Ingham County Circuit Court to stop campaign finance violations in real time.
    • Makes changes to gift disclosure laws and who is considered “lobbyable.”
    • Creates a one-year lobbying prohibition after a lawmaker leaves office.

Next Steps:

    • Legislation will be introduced and referred to committee for consideration.
