The friendships formed in grade school often hold a special place in our hearts. These early connections forged on the playgrounds and in classrooms can become the foundation for lifelong relationships. There’s something uniquely enduring about the friends we make during these formative years. I am fortunate to have met my closest friends in the classroom and hallways of Garfield Elementary. These three gentlemen have seen all aspects of my life, and I have been a part of many of their life moments.

One of the reasons grade school friendships can last a lifetime is the shared experiences and memories. From the excitement of field trips to the challenges of group projects, these moments create a bond that is hard to replicate later in life. The laughter, the tears, and the countless hours spent together build a deep understanding of one another and trust. These friends have seen us at our best and our worst, and they accept us for who we are.

As we grew up, we all got into different activities, from sports to school to civic activities. Even with all these changes the four of us found time to spend together. These friends understand our background, our family dynamics, and our quirks. They have been there through the awkward phases, the triumphs, and the setbacks. This shared history creates a sense of continuity and stability in our lives.  At a recent class reunion, we had the chance to come together and catch up, along with some of our other friends from high school, which was a fantastic evening.

Even if life took us in different directions, reconnecting with Mark, Ben, and Alan is also incredibly rewarding. Whether it’s through social media, reunions, or a weekend away it is always great to see where their kids are or hear about the vacations everyone is taking. But most importantly, we pick up right where we left off, despite the passage of time. This is a testament to the strength of our friendship.

As we navigate the complexities of adulthood, these friendships provide a sense of continuity, stability, and joy. Cherishing and nurturing these relationships can enrich our lives in countless ways. So, reach out to that old friend from grade school, high school, or college—you never know how much they might still mean to you.
