Governor Gretchen Whitmer named Mark Totten as her chief legal counsel. He previously served in the role during her first term as governor.
Background:

- Before returning to the executive office, he was the United States Attorney for the Western District of Michigan.
- Totten served three times in the U.S. Justice Department, where he began his career in Washington, D.C., before returning home to Michigan.
- Additionally, he was a law professor at Michigan State University.
- He received his law degree and a Ph.D. in ethics from Yale University.

- Additionally, he will work closely with state agencies, the Attorney General’s office, and key partners to ensure Michigan’s laws and policies are implemented effectively and responsibly.
Alexis Blane had been serving as the acting chief legal counsel for the past year. She will remain in the executive office, serving as a special advisor to the governor.
