General Election Overview: 3rd Congressional District

Through the general election on November 5, we will highlight races generally considered swing seats. The candidate’s website and professional information are listed when available. 

District Overview

The 3rd Congressional District is located on the west side of Michigan, including portions of Kent County and the City of Grand Rapids.

Commentary

First-term Congresswoman Hillary Scholten is running for reelection in this seat. She successfully flipped the seat from Republican to Democratic in 2022 and the Republican Party is working to flip it back. This is one of the more competitive races in Michigan and is viewed as a toss-up seat.

Democratic Candidate:

    • Congresswoman Hillary Scholten – Congresswoman, attorney, worked for the Department of Justice during the Obama administration and clerked for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Republican Candidate:

    • Paul Hudson – Attorney, clerked for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

Libertarian Candidate:

    • Alex Avery

Working Class Candidate:

    • Louis Palus
