Experiencing the Impact of State Government

As MLC’s Communications and Social Media Manager, Liz Gullett keeps clients informed and up-to-date on the goings on in Lansing and the Capitol.

Satyam Sinha has been an intern with our firm. Before he left to head back to school, I asked him to share some thoughts on his time at MLC.

What drew you to seek out an internship with a lobbying firm?

    • I was drawn to an internship with a lobbying firm because I wanted to engage in an environment that directly connects interest groups with the government. The relationship between these entities is complex, and lobbyists serve as the bridge between the two. Through this experience, I felt I could gain valuable insights into politics from a unique perspective and a deeper understanding of how policy is shaped and influenced.

What is something key you learned through your position at MLC?

    • One key thing I learned during my time at MLC is the significant role that numerous stakeholders play in the legislative process at the state level. Before this experience, my focus was primarily on national politics, and I didn’t fully appreciate the impact of state government. However, through my work, I gained a deeper understanding of how state legislation is shaped—not just by lawmakers, but by a wide range of stakeholders. This includes clients, various interest groups, and others who testify in committee, all of whom contribute to the outcome of legislative decisions.

What lessons will you take with you?

    • Working with a great team is just as important as the work you do. Adaptability and continuous learning are essential for success. There are several ways to impact public policy, from data-driven advocacy to direct collaboration with policymakers but attention to detail makes a significant difference.
