Legislation prohibiting individuals convicted of election-related crimes from serving as state or county election canvassers heard testimony this week in the House Elections Committee.

Key Points:

    • The bill was introduced by Representative Noah Arbit (D-West Bloomfield).
    • For the purpose of the bill, election-related crimes include intentionally disclosing an election result from an early voting site, making a false statement in a post-election campaign finance statement, and violating Michigan’s regulations for election challengers, among a number of other offenses.
    • The Michigan Department of State supported the bill in committee.

Next Steps:

    • House Bill 5551 remains before the House Elections Committee awaiting further consideration.
