The House passed legislation altering the forthcoming changes to Michigan’s minimum wage and paid sick time laws, set to take effect next month. Without action, on February 21, the minimum wage will increase to $12.48/hour, and the tipped rate will increase to $5.99/hour. Additionally, for every 30 hours worked, an employee will accrue 1 hour of sick time.

Highlights of the changes include:

House Bill 4001 – Minimum Wage

    • The bill passed 63 – 41
    • The rate of increase would be as follows:
      • February 21, 2025 –$12/hour
      • January 1, 2026 –$12.50/hour
      • January 1, 2027 –$13/hour
      • January 1, 2028 –$14/hour
      • January 1, 2029 –$15/hour

House Bill 4002 – Paid Sick Leave

    • The bill passed 67-38
    • Allows a business to provide the required paid leave hours at the front end, exempting them from the requirement to track the accrual of leave.
    • Makes changes to employee notification and documentation requirements for taking leave.

Next steps:

  • The bills will be sent to the Senate for consideration.
  • The Michigan Senate has a Democratic majority, as such to move the legislation forward, the House Republican majority will need to negotiate with them, along with the Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer, if the bills are to become law.
