Carving Out Time for Myself

Amber is a meticulously organized, and accomplished attorney, compliance officer, and grants manager.

Driving for work from Detroit to Lansing allows me to indulge in things I usually don’t get a chance to do as a mom of three…such as enjoying quiet or listening to a podcast.

I enjoy listening to an array of genres of podcasts from history to learning new languages. My latest podcast is season 2 of “Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra”. This season centers on the true story of a veteran turned dentist turned politician by the name of Dr. Hunt. He was a Democratic Senator from Wyoming, and the political story is the backdrop to some events that seem plucked from today’s news. His story centers on how the public was fed propaganda while welcoming a nationalist agenda adverse to American democracy, coupled with a politician who died under suspicious circumstances. The podcast teaches a lesson I never learned in history class.

Additionally, I’m listening to an Arabic Course. I began taking Arabic in college and loved learning the language. When possible, I take time to continue to learn. I loved being able to speak it, if only at a beginner’s level when I was younger. I’m hoping that by carving out this time, I’ll be able to grow my ability to speak the language.

Identifying times when you can connect to yourself is critical, especially for parents. While the drive may seem long some days, I gain a connection to myself in those moments.
