The State Board of Education narrowed the list of candidates for the next State Superintendent to three candidates following interviews this week. The finalists were among a group of seven candidates initially selected for interviews from a field of 33 applicants.

The finalists, who will be interviewed at a public meeting next week, are:

    • Dr. Lisa Coons, former Virginia state superintendent of public instruction.
    • Dr. Glenn Maleyko, superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools.
    • Dr. Judy Walton, superintendent and curriculum director for Harrison Community Schools.

The Board is tentatively planning to select its preferred candidate following the interviews on Tuesday, August 26. Once selected, they will offer the position to that person, pending contract negotiations.

State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice announced his retirement early this year. His last day is October 3, 2025. The Board hopes to have a new superintendent in place to assume the position on October 4.
