Unemployment Rate Remains Steady

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in July remained unchanged from the prior month at 5.3%, according to the latest report from the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget. Employment fell by 5,000 over the month, and the number of unemployed people edged down by 1,000.

Key Points:

    • Michigan’s July labor force total of 5,077,000 was the lowest workforce seen in the state since August 2024.
    • Total employment in the state receded by 0.1% over the month.
    • The government sector has the over-the-month job gains of 3,000.
    • The professional and business services had a decline of 3,000, and the leisure and hospitality sector declined by 2,000.
    • The total number of unemployed in the state advanced by 10.2% over the year.
    • The July statewide labor force participation rate receded by one-tenth of a percentage point over the month to 61.6%.
    • Michigan’s employment-population ratio was unchanged in July at 58.4%.

Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area:

    • July’s unemployment rate also remained unchanged at 4.8%.
    • Employment rose by 5,000, while unemployment edged down by 1,000.
    • Over the year, the area’s unemployment rate increased by 0.2%.

During July, the national unemployment rate rose by one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.2%.
