As president of Michigan Legislative Consultants, Tim loves the challenge of driving change in public policy.

If there’s one habit that’s consistently pushed me to grow—both professionally and personally—it’s reading. Over the past few years, I’ve immersed myself in books that challenge my thinking, inspire better habits, and give me tools to lead and work more effectively. Today, I’m sharing a handful of standout authors and one game-changing book recommendation that made an immediate impact on how I work and live.

Simon Sinek – The Power of Purpose

Simon Sinek’s work resonates deeply with anyone looking to build organizations and lives driven by purpose. His landmark book, Start With Why, isn’t just a leadership manual—it’s a lens through which to evaluate everything from career choices to team dynamics. Sinek reminds us that people don’t buy what we do, they buy why we do it. That mindset shift can transform how we lead, communicate, and connect.

I also recommend his books The Infinite Game and Leaders Eat Last.

Adam Grant – The Organizational Psychologist We All Needed

Few authors balance science and storytelling like Adam Grant. His books Give and Take, Originals, and Think Again explore the psychology behind generosity, creativity, and the courage to rethink our assumptions. Grant’s insights have helped me understand not just how to work smarter, but how to build more human-centered, innovative teams. His blend of research and real-world examples makes complex ideas feel surprisingly actionable.

I also recommend his podcast Work Life, with his entertaining style and fascinating guests.

James Clear – Small Habits, Massive Impact

James Clear’s Atomic Habits has earned its place as a modern classic for a reason. It’s not just a book about habits—it’s a blueprint for behavioral change. Clear masterfully explains how small, consistent improvements compound over time. Whether it’s tweaking your morning routine or reshaping your team’s workflow, his practical strategies for habit formation make sustainable change feel attainable.

Immediate Impact Read: “Timeboxing” by Marc Zao-Sanders

If you’re looking for a single book that can change the way you manage your day tomorrow, I can’t recommend Timeboxing by Marc Zao-Sanders enough. This book cuts through the noise of productivity hacks and delivers a method that’s as simple as it is effective: allocating fixed time slots for discrete tasks.

Zao-Sanders provides the structure and science behind the approach, making it easy to adopt and tailor to your schedule. It’s perfect for anyone battling constant distractions or decision fatigue. I noticed a difference in my focus and energy within days of applying it, and most importantly, a dramatic increase in my productivity.

Why These Books Matter

What ties these authors together is their commitment to clarity, intention, and improvement. They don’t just give you theories—they provide frameworks and mindsets that are practical, tested, and impactful. Whether you’re leading a team, growing a business, or simply trying to level up personally, these reads offer more than inspiration—they give you a roadmap.

Your Turn:

Have you read any of these authors or books? What’s made a difference in your growth journey? I’d love to hear what’s on your shelf.
