This week, the Michigan Senate approved legislation creating the Prescription Drug Affordability Board and Prescription Drug Affordability Council. The goal of the proposal is to reduce the cost of prescription medications for Michigan residents.

Key Points:

    • Senate Bills 3 – 5 were introduced by Senator Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown), Senator Veronica Klinefelt (D-Eastpointe), and Senator Sue Shink (D-Ann Arbor).
    • Under the legislation, the Board would set a maximum cost for certain prescriptions within the state.
    • It lays out specific criteria for which prescriptions they will review and what information they consider when setting a maximum cost.
    • The bill allows the Michigan Attorney General to take civil action for violations.
    • The Board would be required to file an annual report with the Legislature.
    • Any insurance company that offers policies in Michigan, along with Medicaid, would be required to abide by the costs.

Next Steps:

    • The bills were referred to the House Government Operations Committee for consideration.
