Legislation amending Earned sick time laws in Michigan had its first hearing in the Senate Regulatory Affairs Committee this week. While no vote was held, the committee heard testimony by those impacted by the forthcoming changes on February 21.

Key Points:

    • Senate Bill 15 was introduced by Senator Sam Singh (D-East Lansing).
    • The proposal expands the definition of small business from less than 10 employees to less than 25.
    • It allows a business to front-load the required number of paid sick time at the beginning of the year.
    • It shortens the time frame an employee can act on an alleged violation from three years to one year.
    • The bill states that an employer may be liable for a civil fine of up to eight times the employees’ hourly wage for not providing paid sick time as required under the law.
    • The House previously passed their version of the changes, which were widely supported by the business community.

Next Steps:

    • The bill remains before the committee awaiting further consideration.
