Lt. Governor Attends Bridge Walk

Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist led the annual Mackinac Bridge Walk on Labor Day this week.

Key Points:

    • The bridge walk has been an annual event on Labor Day since 1958, with the exception of 2020.
    • The bridge closed at 6:30 a.m. to all vehicle traffic and reopened at noon.
    • 30,000 people were in attendance for the walk this year.
    • In recent years, crowds ranged from 21,000 to 35,000.

Mackinac Bridge:

    • The bridge first opened for traffic on November 1, 1957.
    • It spans five miles, connecting Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas.
    • Approximately four million vehicles cross the bridge annually.
