District Overview

The 7th Congressional District is located in mid-Michigan, including the greater Lansing area.

Commentary

This toss-up district became open when Democratic Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin chose to forego reelection to run for the U.S. Senate. This race is not only one of the most competitive in Michigan but also nationally.

Republican Tom Barrett ran for this seat in 2022 and lost by 6 points to Congresswoman Slotkin. However, the demographics of this seat are near 50/50, and without an incumbent on the ballot, the race is up in the air.

Democratic Candidate:

    • Curtis Hertel – Former Michigan State Senator, Ingham County Commissioner, and director of legislative affairs for Governor Whitmer

Republican Candidate:

    • Tom Barrett – U.S. Army Veteran, former Michigan State Senator and Representative.

    • Rachel Dailey
