Representative Jim Haadsma (D-Battle Creek) is serving his third term in the Michigan House of Representatives. He is the chair of the Labor Committee, which has purview over a wide range of issues impacting Michigan resident’s lives. Additionally, he chairs the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules and is a member of the Health Policy Committee.

Prior to being elected to the House, Representative Haadsma was a practicing attorney and served on the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners. He received a bachelor’s in English from Michigan State University and earned his law degree from Wayne State University Law School.

He represents the 44th House District in Calhoun County.

We asked Representative Haadsma a couple of questions to learn more about him:

    • What’s your favorite travel destination outside of Michigan?
      • Representative Haadsma – My favorite future travel destination will be Zimbabwe, in Southern Africa. My late parents were foreign missionaries in Zimbabwe, and Zimbabwe was where I spent my high school years. I last saw Zimbabwe upon visiting my parents there in 1980, and I’d like to take a look around at places of my teenage years within the next decade or so.
    • What’s your favorite hobby other than politics?
      • Representative Haadsma – A favorite interest is community theater. I have joined community theater casts in many productions over the years, and recently enjoyed a cameo role in Albion Community Theatre’s ACT-2 company’s March 2024 production of “War of the Worlds” at Albion’s restored Bohm Theater.
    • What did you want to be when you were a kid?
      • Representative Haadsma – As a teenager and college student, I had hoped to write and undertook an MFA program in fiction writing before I decided at age 22 to change direction and attend law school the next academic year.
    • What’s your favorite game to play or sport to watch and/or play?
      • Representative Haadsma – I love baseball and enjoy attending White Sox or Tigers games, or local Battle Creek Battle Jacks games, reading paper newspaper baseball stories at the games and sharing ballpark food and laughs with my young adult kids.
