Governor Gretchen Whitmer was in Washington D.C. this week meeting with officials in the Biden administration to pitch Michigan for additional investment in economic and workforce development, innovation, and cross-border cooperation. The State of Michigan has already secured more than $12.4 billion of federal investments.

Department of Defense:

    • The governor met with DOD officials to discuss Michigan’s Uncrewed Tripled Challenge, an autonomous drone competition challenging teams of academics and industry innovators to carry a payload over air, land, and water.

Department of Interior:

    • Governor Whitmer advocated for the Keweenaw Peninsula to be designated as Michigan’s second-ever National Heritage Area.
    • She highlighted state and local efforts around land conservation in the area, as well as the area’s historical heritage in copper and its lasting impact on the region’s tourism and education industries.
    • National Heritage Areas are places where natural, cultural, and historic resources combine to form a cohesive, nationally important landscape, and unleash hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal investment.
