All public high schools would be required to offer a computer science course(s) under legislation considered by the House Education Committee this week.

Key Points:

    • HB 5649 was introduced by Representative Carol Glanville (D-Walker).
    • The requirement would begin with the 2027 -2028 school year.
    • In the bill, computer science is defined as the study of computers and algorithmic processes. This includes hardware, software, and implementation, among others.
    • The proposal also requires schools to submit a report to the Center for Education Performance Information with information such as the names of computer science courses offered and enrollment data.

Next Steps:

    • The bill remains before the House Education Committee awaiting further consideration.
