Through the primary election on August 6, we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. The candidate’s website and professional information are listed when available.

District Overview

The 5th House District is located in southeast Michigan, including portions of Oakland and Wayne Counties.

Commentary

Representative Regina Weiss is running for a third term in the House. This district has a strong Democratic base of 93% making the Democratic primary key to winning this seat. This is one of the districts the Michigan Supreme Court ordered to be redrawn earlier this year after finding the 2021 map was racially gerrymandered.

Democratic Candidates:

    • Crystal Bailey – Business owner, worked in the Juvenile Probation Department in Oakland County, former Oak Park School Board of Education Vice President.
    • Myya Jones
    • Kevin Keys – Student at Texas Southern University working toward a Master of Education.
    • Eric Love – Pastor, full-time college student, member of the Oak Park Economic Development Corp/Brownfield Redevelopment Authority board.
    • Representative Regina Weiss – State Representative, former teacher, and Oak Park City Council member.

Republican Candidate:

    • Will Sears
