Senator AnthonySenator Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing) made history when she was named the first African American woman to serve as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. The Appropriations Chair is viewed as the most influential as it crafts the state budget, having purview over the billions of dollars the state appropriates each year.

Senator Anthony is serving her first term in the Senate, following three terms in the Michigan House of Representatives. While in the House, Senator Anthony was elected by her peers to serve as the Democratic Caucus Chair. Prior to her service in the legislature, Senator Anthony served on the Ingham County Board of Commissioners. She previously worked as the Deputy and Interim Executive Director of the Michigan College Access Network. Senator Anthony has a bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University and a master’s degree from Western Michigan University.

She represents the 21st Senate District in mid-Michigan. The district includes portions of Eaton and Ingham Counties.

We asked Senator Anthony a couple of questions to learn more about her:

    1. What’s your favorite travel destination outside of Michigan?
      1. Senator Anthony – Chicago, it was my grandmother’s favorite city and I love heading there on the train.
    2. What did you want to be when you were a kid?
