Governor Whitmer launched the Community and Worker Economic Transition Office to develop proactive strategies and deploy resources to help companies and residents take advantage of economic opportunities as Michigan shifts to high-tech advancements. The new office will be housed within the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.

The new office will:

    • Prioritize collaboration with community leaders and stakeholders to co-create a clear vision for a diversified economy.
    • Centralize information on regional and federal resources, track initiatives, and provide technical assistance and capacity to connect communities to resources.
    • Help workers through increasing awareness of and decreasing barriers to accessing resources.
    • Partner with community leaders to influence the design of new programs that fill gaps.
    • Collaborate with workforce partners to ensure priority populations receive proactive outreach.
    • Focus on targeting opportunities to support small and medium-sized businesses, women and minority-owned businesses, and those that have experienced losses from the decline of manufacturing jobs.

Energy:

    • The office is a piece of the Clean Energy and Jobs Package, aiming to support communities, workers, and employers by ensuring they can proactively prepare for, benefit from, and shape Michigan’s future economy.
    • It will lead efforts to develop a statewide plan for upcoming advancements in high-tech EV manufacturing and clean energy opportunities.
    • The office is the first in the nation to address shifts to renewable energy in both utility and auto sectors.
