Legislation that would place certain aspects of the Federal Affordable Care Act (ACA) into Michigan law was passed this week. If the proposal becomes state law, it ensures portions of the ACA would remain within Michigan even if Congress acted to remove or change them.

Key Points:

    • A person couldn’t be charged a different rate for the same coverage based on reasons such as race, gender, creed, or national origin.
    • A person couldn’t be denied coverage based on a preexisting condition.
    • Requires coverage of a dependent until they are 26 years old.
    • An insurer couldn’t place annual or lifetime limits on coverage.
    • Requires coverage of certain services such as emergency services, hospitalization, and pregnancy.

Next Steps:

    • The bills will be sent to Governor Whitmer for consideration.
