Legislation requiring health insurers to cover certain mental health or substance abuse treatment was reported by the House Insurance and Financial Services Committee.

Key Points:

    • The bill was introduced by Representative Felicia Brabec (D-Ann Arbor) who is a clinical psychologist.
    • Requires coverage for medically necessary treatment of mental health or substance abuse disorders.
    • This includes screenings, prevention, diagnosing, managing, and/or treating.
    • An insurer would be required to provide coverage for the full continuum of service intensities and levels of care.
    • The legislation also makes changes to prior authorization, level of care placement, out-of-network coverage, among many other areas.

Next Steps:

    • The bill was referred to the House floor for consideration.
