Michigan would join the National Popular Vote Compact under legislation reported by the House Elections Committee this week.

Key Points:

  • The compact is a pledge to allocate electoral votes to whoever wins the nationwide, rather than statewide, popular vote.
  • Currently, 15 states and the District of Columbia, have signed onto the compact. This represents 195 electoral votes.
  • The compact would take effect if a collective number of states with 270 electoral votes enter.
  • If the compact takes effect, it would take precedence over state law.

Impact:

Over the last several years discussions regarding the manner in which the president is elected have intensified. Those in support of the current electoral college system state that it ensures residents throughout the country have input on the president. However, those who support a popular vote have stated the person who receives the most votes should be elected, as is the case in other elections.

Next Steps:

The bill was reported to the House floor for consideration.
