Vehicle Rebate Plan Proposed

Michigan residents could receive a rebate when purchasing a new vehicle in Michigan under a plan proposed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer this week. Eligible purchases would qualify for a rebate between $1,000 – $2,500, depending on the type of vehicle. Additionally, there’s a $7,500 federal credit that Michigan vehicle owners could utilize on top of the proposed Michigan program.

Key Points:

    • The purchase of a new battery electric or hybrid vehicle would be eligible for a rebate between $2,000 – $2,500.
    • Purchasing a new internal combustion vehicle would be eligible for a rebate between $1,000 – $1,500.
    • The state tax rebate would be applied to the final price of a vehicle at the time of purchase.
    • The program would continue until all allocated funds are used.

In the State of the State address early next year, Governor Whitmer will ask the legislature to appropriate $25 million to fund the program.
