Timeline Set for New Superintendent

This week, the State Board of Education selected a company to lead the search for Michigan’s next State Superintendent and set a deadline for a formal appointment on September 9.

Background:

    • In April, State Superintendent Dr. Michigan Rice announced he is retiring on October 3, 2025.
    • The elected State Board of Education is responsible for appointment the State Superintendent, who serves as head of the Michigan Department of Education.

Timeline:

    • The position is scheduled to be posted on June 25.
    • After screening and vetting candidates and an online survey of the public and engagement with stakeholders, the Board is tentatively planning to select candidates for first-round interviews on August 12.
    • Public interviews by the Board are tentatively scheduled for the week of August 18.
    • The Board will select finalists to interview the following week, with the goal of selecting the preferred candidate by August 26.
    • Then the Board will negotiate a contract with a preferred candidate, and a deep background check will be completed.
    • The formal appointment would occur at the September 9 State Board of Education meeting.
