Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Elizabeth Clement announced she is stepping down from the bench and will serve as president of the National Center for State Courts. She informed Governor Whitmer that she would be stepping down no later than April 30, 2025.

Key Points:

    • Justice Clement was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Snyder in 2017 and elected to a full term in the 2018 general election.
    • She’s served as Chief Justice since November 2022.
    • Prior to serving on the bench, she was the chief legal counsel in the executive office.
    • Throughout her career, she’s had multiple roles in the executive office, the Michigan Senate, and the Senate Majority Policy Office.
    • Justice Clement began her career in private practice, working in the areas of family law, adoption, probate, estate planning, and criminal law.

Next Steps:

    • Governor Gretchen Whitmer will make an appointment to fill the vacancy for the remainder of Justice Clement’s term.
