Representative Helena Scott (D-Detroit) chairs the House Energy, Communications, and Technology Committee, a highly influential committee responsible for energy policy and oversight for the state. She also serves as the historian for the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus. Additionally, Representative Scott sits on the Higher Education Committee, the Insurance and Financial Services Committee, and the Regulatory Reform Committee.
Representative Scott began her career working for over 20 years as a sales and service instructor in the airline industry. Additionally, she worked for her predecessor, former Representative LaTanya Garrett as her community liaison. Representative Scott also has served as an organizer and labor and social justice community activist, including lead organizer for Southeast Michigan Jobs with Justice, a member of the steering committee for One Fair Wage, and an executive board member for the Coalition of Labor Union Women, the Detroit League of Women Voters, and vice chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Black Caucus. Representative Scott received her bachelor’s degree in psychology and political science from Marygrove College.
She represents the 7th House District in portions of Oakland and Wayne Counties in southeast Michigan.
