Legislation aimed at tackling election disinformation and improving transparency and integrity in the petition circulation process passed the Senate with bipartisan support.

Key Points:

    • Senate Bills 529-531 were introduced by Senators Jeremy Moss (D-Bloomfield) and Jeff Irwin (D-Ann Arbor).
    • The package also includes Senate Bill 533, sponsored by Senator Mary Cavanagh (D-Redford Twp.), which passed in September.
    • It bans petition organizers from paying circulators per signature.
    • It requires circulators to direct potential signers to a factual summary of the ballot proposal’s contents and purpose before collecting their signature.
    • Ensures that only one signature is counted if two identical signatures appear on a single petition.
    • Prohibits false statements or misrepresentations concerning elections.

Next Steps:

    • SBs 529-531 were referred to the House Election Integrity Committee for consideration.
    • SB 533 was referred to the House Government Operations Committee for consideration.
